In the final part of the course, materials conservation, recycling and sustainable use will be discussed. In addition, the economical and ecological aspects of biofuels development will also be discussed.
EE — Electricity for Modern Society The course will provide an overview of the generation and distribution of electricity, and how electricity usage impacts modern society. Green computing, or green IT, is the design and engineering of environmentally sustainable hardware and software.
MS — Materials for Energy Conversion This course will give an introduction to materials and fuels for conventional energy technology. EMEnergy Resources Management This introductory course will provide an overview of energy resources management in the context of sustainable economic development.
Students will also be exposed to aspects of green biotechnology, green chemistry and metabolic engineering which play an increasingly important role in the sustainability of the biofuels conversion process. Chemical methods, fermentation and biocatalysis technologies which are commonly used in conversion of biomass to biofuels are included in this course.
Supercapacitors and batteries will be discussed in the final part of the course on energy storage. Essential aspects of power system technology, electricity utilisation and recent developments on electricity industry restructuring would be discussed.
The challenges in energy storage and conversion will be examined. Topics include energy and human society, energy resources and reserves, supply, distribution, utilisation, recovery and conversion, environmental impacts of energy utilisation, energy economics and policies.
Lastly, efficient energy utilisation and energy conservation will be discussed. The types of renewable energy sources will be introduced, followed by the principles and applications of energy conversion devices namely crystalline solar cells, thin film solar cells and thermoelectric devices.
This course will endow students with a basic knowledge of the latest in green initiatives that span the entire IT lifecycle so that students are aware of the trends, impacts and contributions of IT towards an energy-efficient and carbon-friendly global economy.
There will be an introduction to each energy source, covering both conventional and renewable sources. Open to all NTU students.
